Senate
Votes Against Border Fence Funds
ust weeks
after voting to authorize construction to build 370 miles
of new fencing along the border with Mexico, the Senate
voted against providing any funds to build it. The vote
allows senators to tell constituents back home upset about
illegal immigration that they voted to "authorize"
border fence security, even though the fence will not really
be built. That enables the same senators to tell Hispanic
voters they voted against building the fence.
The Senate voted 71 to 29 against an amendment by Sen. Jeff
Sessions, R-AL, to appropriate $1.8 billion to pay for the
very same fencing that the Senate authorized back in May
when it voted 83 to 16 to authorize the fence to stem the
tide of illegal immigration.
Nearly all Democrats joined with 28 Republicans to defeat
Sessions' effort to fund construction of the fence. The
money was to be included in a $32 billion appropriations
package for the Department of Homeland Security. Here is
the roll call vote on July 13. A "yes" vote is
to fund construction of the fence. A "no" vote
is to defeat funding.
